Take Action - Block HR 9495: Stop Congress from Handing Administration New Censorship Power

House passes bill that would allow Treasury to target nonprofits it deems to support terrorism

Associated Press - 11.22.24 - By Thalia Beaty and Farnoush Amiri

HR 9495, which passed the US House of Representatives yesterday, authorizes broad and easily abused new executive branch powers. It grants the Secretary of the Treasury virtually unfettered discretion to designate any US nonprofit as a “terrorist supporting organization” and strip it of its tax-exempt status.

The legislation does not require disclosure of the reasons for such. Decision or the evidence relied upon to support it, nor would the government be required to provide any evidence in its possession that might undermine its decision.

The potential for abuse under HR 9495 is immense, as it would hand the administration a tool it could use to curb free speech, censor nonprofit media outlets, target political opponents, and punish disfavored groups across the political spectrum.

Call your Senators today and demand that they reject this bill.

Hi, my name is [NAME] and I’m a constituent from [CITY, ZIP]. I’m calling to urge [SEN NAME] to vote against HR 9495, the Stop Terror - Financing and Tax Penalties on American Hostages Act. This broad and far-reaching bill has too much potential for abuse to curb free speech and censor political opposition.
