The adult Mental Health First Aid course is appropriate for anyone 18 years and older who wants to learn how to help a person who may be experiencing a mental health related crisis or problem. Topics covered include anxiety, depression, psychosis, and addictions. Course participants come from a variety of backgrounds and play various roles in a community, and instructors may specialize in providing the course to groups such as police officers or faith leaders.
People are often trained to know CPR or the Heimlich maneuver or first aid, but many people are unsure what to do if they come in contact with someone who is suffering from a mental health or emotional crisis. MHFA training participants learn about some of the most common signs of mental health issues, how to identify warning signs that indicate an individual may be at risk of harm or suicide, listen non-judgmentally, give reassurance and encourage the person to seek professional help.
This training is in partnership with Optum Salt Lake County. To register, contact Julie Hardle at Optum: julie.hardle@optum.com, (801) 982-3217.
